What are Callus and Heel Fissures?

Callus and heel fissures are foot conditions resulting from pressure and friction, with calluses forming as thickened, hard skin areas, commonly on the heels and areas of bone pressure. They can cause discomfort and appear yellowish and rough. Heel fissures, known as cracked heels, develop when dry, thickened skin on the heels forms painful cracks, exacerbated by weight bearing.

The Causes

Understanding these conditions aids in prevention and effective treatment for improved foot health.

  • Friction & Pressure

  • Dry Skin

  • Biomechanical Issues

  • Ageing

  • Medical Conditions

  • Neglect

Callus and heel fissures are caused by constant pressure and friction. This can be caused by high heels and poor footwear such as steel toe cap boots.

Dry skin is more likely to develop into calluses or heel fissures due to the build-up of dry, dead skin cells on the feet. The build-up of dry dead skin cells can be caused due to dehydration of the skin and dry environments.

Certain foot structures and foot mechanics can increase the exertion of pressure on specific areas of the feet, resulting in calluses and heel fissures forming.

Naturally as individuals age, the skin texture and integrity changes as the skin becomes drier, thinner, and less elastic due to the reduced collagen and elastin production. This increases the risk of calluses and heel fissures forming.

Some medical conditions affect the skin such as diabetes, psoriasis, and vascular disease, increasing the likelihood of calluses and heel fissures forming. Similarly, some medical conditions can affect the biomechanics and shape of the foot, such as rheumatoid arthritis, which increases the risk of calluses and heel fissures forming too.

Poor foot hygiene and neglect can aggravate dry, thickened skin, increasing the risk of the formation of calluses and heel fissures.

  • Debridement

This is the removal of callus and hard skin using a sterile blade. It is usually a pain free procedure.

  • Emollient Advice

Dry skin can increase the likelihood of calluses and heel fissures forming, therefore moisturising the area can prevent formation.

  • Footwear Review & Advice

Reviewing footwear can identify if the footwear is causing excessive pressure and friction on the feet. Having more suitable footwear can prevent calluses and heel fissures from forming.

  • Insoles

Certain areas of the foot may be having excessive pressure causing calluses, thus the use of insoles can offload the area and redistribute the pressure within the foot.

  • Padding/Cushioning

the use of semi compressed felt padding around the area can be offloaded and the pressure can be redistributed within the foot.

  • Timeframe

Typically lasting between 30 minutes to one hour, our efficient service prioritises both thoroughness and your schedule.
