What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a medical condition characterised by elevated levels of glucose in the blood. This occurs either because the body does not produce enough insulin or as the cells in the body do not respond effectively to insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps regulate blood sugar levels.

How Does Diabetes Affect the Foot?

Diabetes affects the feet through nerve damage (neuropathy) and reduced blood flow, increasing the risk of foot ulcers and delayed wound healing. These complications heighten the risk of infections and require specialised care. Regular foot assessments and care are crucial for preventing serious issues stemming from diabetes.

What to expect

Our Diabetic Foot Assessment

At ZP Podiatry, our highly trained podiatrist conducts a thorough examination to assess nerve function, circulation, skin integrity and overall health and wellbeing.

  • Holistic Examination

  • Skin Integrity & General Assessment

  • Vascular Assessment

  • Neurological Assessment

A thorough holistic examination is conducted by checking your full medical history, previous surgeries, current medication, allergies, current treatments and overall health and wellbeing. Also, your diabetic status, symptoms and HbA1c or blood glucose levels will be discussed.

This includes checking the temperature of your feet, checking if there are any wounds or ulcers, checking for swelling (oedema) and looking for symptoms that indicate poor circulation such as loss of hair follicles.

Pulses in the feet will be palpated and a doppler assessment will be carried out which localises the pulses and determines their strength.

The 10g monofilament test is conducted which is an effective screening tool for evaluating sensory perception in the feet.
